TIPS FOR YOUR FREE TIME IN TOWN:

  • Visit to the Basilica of Sant’Ubaldo,  beloved patron saint of Gubbio. The church is located on the very top of Mount Ingino, on the side of which the city was built. There are three ways to get up there: 1) By bus, 2) By chairlift, 3) on foot (about 3km and very steep), following the same path run by the famous CERI DI GUBBIO (Festa dei Ceri Photo credits Bellaumbria) . Every year on May 15th the THE CANDLES RACE, the most awaited event by the locals, takes place in town  The race recalls the medieval procession held every year to honor Sant’Ubaldo, who had died in 1160. The inhabitants of Gubbio used to walk in procession up to the church on top of the mountain bringing three huge wax candles as offerings to Ubaldo. From the 16th century the wax candles were replaced by large wooden machines – about 4m high! – and the traditional procession was turned into a crazy race all through the city center and up on the mountain!
