It’s definitely not a typical Italian event: we even don’t have a good translation for the name in Italian!
The Urban Knitting is a kind of “inoffensive urban graffiti” made with knitted fabric. This is a very special art expression born in the US some years ago and now spreading all over the world.
The idea of a Todi Urban Knitting event was born about 1 year ago thanks to two lovely and smart women, Annamaria and Alexandra.
Annamaria is Umbrian and 2 years ago she opened a very nice haberdashery in Todi’s old town.
Alexandra is from Atlanta (US) and she moved to Todi with all her family about 2 years ago.
They both are passionate about knitting: they met once at Annamaria’s shop and between a ball of yarn and crochet, the idea of a brand new knitting event began to develop.
They started to knit not only in the shop, but also publicly in some Todi’s bars: they spread the word and soon after others ladies joined the project, knitting together to decorate the Municipal Garden of Todi!
One of these ladies is my mother: she did some mushrooms and some lamppost cosies!
And here’s the result: colored trees and lampposts, spiders on a wool net, mushrooms and darling owls… You have time to admire Todi’s knitting until May 25!
