Sweet Easter Pizza of Todi

Dear Friends of Todiguide’s Blog,

You know, in 2 weeks we’ll celebrate Easter and all over the world people will have their special “thing” to do or to eat!

Well, in Todi we usually cook two different kinds of Pizza: the Cheese Pizza, strictly eaten with our homemade capocollo ( a very tasty local coldcut  ), and the Sweet Pizza, maybe a bit less famous than the Cheese one, but not less delicious !

This is the original recipe written by my grandmother Mimmetta and still followed by heart by my mother Oriana! You can admire the result  in the photos, but unfortunately not with your taste buds…

Some tips: try it with chocolate…we say ”It’s its death!”, or soak it in milk and coffee, or use some slices of it as a base for a trifle with homemade cream!

INGREDIENTS:
4 cubes of fresh yeast ( not the powder!)

March 17th...

What happens on March 17th? Well, it’s Saint Patrick’s Day!!! Ok, not very famous here in Italy, but so important in other towns and nations all over the world! New York, Savannah….but above all in Ireland.

I’ve always been in love with Ireland, with its history, with its traditions and its amazing music. I studied English in Dublin too and my university thesis was entitled “Irland: a singing land”. My favorite ballads were “The foggy dew” and “Danny Boy”.

However, what have Patrick and Ireland got to do with Todi? Well, this was a great surprise for me too, when I discovered that there is a little piece of Ireland in Todi, just around the corner! Go to Borgo Nuovo district: then enter the church of Saint Francis Monastery and go to the left side of the altar. You’ll find a quite big and ancient iron grate: take a look through it and you’ll see a fresco named “The Purgatory of Saint Patrick”.

la bottega magica

"The Magic Shop" is a special project of Todiguide.com and sitodi.net dedicated to craftsmen and artists of Umbria. Let's start with the ones in Todi!!!
Close your eyes and try to immagine it: you are in Todi at the end of the 13th century and you are walking about the streets of the center. Suddenly a long and elegant  procession arrives to the square and you admire dames and knights, religious characters and political figures, such as the Podestà, the Consoli and the  Priori. The Priori were the representatives of Guilds and they had a strong power at that time. The most important Priori were those of the Money Changers, of Merchants and...of Shoemakers!
Incredible , but true: shoemakers had a so relevant weight in the administration of the comune.
Well, today things have changed!
You can still find shoemakers somewhere in our towns, but “the contemporary ones”, which work with modern machinery.
However there is a special place in Todi where you can find an “original” shoemaker of the mid' of the last century. I'm talking about Mr. Rinaldo Zoppini.
